Activision was originally based in Sunnyvale, California in 1979, Activision Inc. the foundation of the company was formed due to a dissatisfaction of previous Atari employees wanting to create their own venue for developing a new vision of video games. Quickly becoming the first independent third- party console video game developer, Activision was unfortunately affected by the 1983 video game crash which developed as a result of an over saturation of new start up companies who, although inspired by Activision , attempted to hastily follow in their footsteps, consequently flooding the video game console developer market.

This 1983 video game crash did negatively affect Activision’s overall position in the hierarchy of the console games marketplace. However, it also gave rise to the necessity of expanding their operations into developing video games for home computers. Later, this expansion resulted in the acquisition of Infocom. After some management shifting, the company briefly was renamed Mediagenic. However, issues with debt and a buyout from an investor’s group, caused them to revert to their original namesake, Activision.
