Tony Hawk’s Proving ground was nominated for the VGX Award for Best Soundtrack and the VGX Award for Best Individual Sports Game.

As a sequel to Tony Hawk’s Project 8, Proving Ground allows the player flexibility in choosing a personalized storyline. Players are capable of making various in-game choices such as which cities they would like to skateboard in. The story’s flow can be shaped by the influence of the different categories of skaters as well. These categories include: Hardcore, Career, Rigger and Street. Proving Ground incorporates an expansive “Nail-the Trick-” system. This system allows the completion of flashy moves such as Nail-the-Manual, Aggro Push, and Nail-the-Grab.

As gameplay continues, players are able to seek the advice of their favorite professional skaters. The pros assist them in creating and formulating their very own personally created skater. This expert level advice also allows the player to master difficult moves and tricks. There is also the impressive capability to build their own skate park.
